2018 LUNGS The Living Classroom (TLC)

TLC Summer Classes for Children 2018

This summer, LUNGS Environmental Education Project (LEEP) brings a free urban nature exploration for children to our neighborhood community gardens, The Living Classroom, TLC. The Living Classroom will turn the gardens into living laboratories and artist studios.

We will be combining hands-on investigation and inquiry-based learning with art making and movement. The classes will be taught by two professional educators and run for six weeks.

The Living Classrooms will taught in two community gardens between July 9 and August 18, 2018. Classes are free and open to all children ages 5 to 10.

This is the second year for the TLC Program, last year 200 students passed through our classes.  Classes will take place in Green Oasis, 376 E8 St, between Aves C & D and Campos Garden, 640 E.12 ST, between Aves B & C.

The Living Classroom offers two different nature-based lessons, the Green Machine and Flower Power. Each program stretches over two afternoons: days and times are being coordinated now with the Educational Alliance and the Chinese Planning Committee . Over the course of two weeks, each program will be offered at each participating garden. The lessons are designed for elementary school children kindergarten through 5th grade.

The Green Machine investigates the relationships of the organisms that live in the garden. Flower Power studies the parts of a flower and the role of flowers in the life of the planet. Each lesson consists of two afternoons each week in each garden.

Enrollment is free of charge and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is offered free of charge.

This is not a drop off program, children must be accompanied by a caretaker. Adults will be requested to participate for the duration of the program.
