TLC Summer Classes for Children 2017
This summer, LUNGS Environmental Education Project (LEEP) brings a free urban nature exploration for children to our neighborhood community gardens, The Living Classroom, TLC. The Living Classroom will turn the gardens into living laboratories and artist studios.
We will be combining hands-on investigation and inquiry-based learning with art making and movement. The classes will be taught by four registered teachers and run for eight weeks.
The Living Classrooms will taught in eight different community gardens between July 10 and August 29, 2017. Classes are free and open to all children ages 5 to 10.
LUNGS Environmental Education Project (LEEP) is a new program funded by a grant from City Council Member Rosie Mendez and the Citizens Committee of New York City.
The Living Classroom offers two different nature-based lessons, the Green Machine and Flower Power. Each program stretches over two afternoons: Monday & Tuesday from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Over the course of two weeks, each program will be offered at each participating garden. The lessons are designed for elementary school children kindergarten through 5th grade.
The Green Machine investigates the relationships of the organisms that live in the garden. Flower Power studies the parts of a flower and the role of flowers in the life of the planet. Each lesson consists of two afternoons each week in each garden.
Enrollment is free of charge and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is offered free of charge.
While it is not required that your child attends all four classes, we encourage full participation. Each class is designed to be a stand alone lesson. But your child will derive maximum benefits from the TLC by attending each class.
This is not a drop off program, children must be accompanied by a caretaker. Adults will be requested to participate for the duration of the program.
Please take a look at the schedule below and pick dates and locations which are best for you. To reserve a spot for you and your child(ren) at the garden of your choice, book online now. [Link]
